His parents were Prince Magnus of Sweden , son of King Niels of Denmark , and Rikissa of Poland .

After the death of King Eric III. Lamm in 1146 there were throne disputes between Canute and his cousin, Prince Sven III. In view of the imminent crusade against the Wends , they first made peace and raised a joint army against the Slavs. Two years later, the throne disputes continued. At the Merseburg Diet in 1152, Knut was moved to renounce the throne and, as a Danish vassal, Duke of Sjælland . He was invited with his cousin Sven. Sven came accompanied by the Archbishop of Bremen Hartwig I. von Stade and Knut, accompanied by Heinrich the Lion . Friedrich Barbarossa was able to achieve a balance between the opponents through an arbitration award . Soon there were new quarrels. Both tried to win Count Adolf II. Von Schauenburg and Holstein , who decided in favor of Knut and was enfeoffed with possessions (probably in Schleswig). Knut allied himself with Waldemar , the son of Knud Lavard , whom his father had murdered and who had previously supported Sven. Together they were elected kings of Denmark in Viborg in 1154 , while Sven had to go into exile. Waldemar I became engaged to Knut's half-sister Sophia . After Sven's return, Knut was murdered by Sven on August 9, 1157 at a party on the occasion of the successful negotiations.
