Location of the municipality of Baabe in the Vorpommern-Rügen district | ||
The Ostseebad Baabe is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is the seat of the Mönchgut-Granitz office , to which another five communities belong.
Geography and traffic
The Ostseebad Baabe, a health resort in the southeast of the Baltic Sea island of Rügen , is located between the Baltic Sea resorts of Sellin and Göhren on the Mönchgut peninsula . The place is on the Mönchgraben , the historical border that separates the Mönchgut peninsula from the rest of the island of Rügen, between the Baltic Sea and the Baaber Beek (connecting ditch between Selliner See and Having ) and the forests of the Baaber Heide . The federal highway 196 and the narrow-gauge railway Rasender Roland run through Baabe . The Mönchgut-Tor spans the B 196 at the level of the Mönchgraben.
Baabe and Sellin form a common basic center for their surroundings .
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1252. However, the destroyed large stone grave Spukbusch west of the village testifies to a much older settlement history . Baabe, like the entire Mönchgut peninsula, was owned by the Cistercian monastery Eldena near Greifswald until 1535 . Until the middle of the 19th century, Baabe only consisted of a farm with several Büdner and cottage workers .
The place was part of the Principality of Rügen until 1326 and then the Duchy of Pomerania . With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, Rügen and thus also the area of Baabe became part of Swedish Pomerania . The medieval Mönchgraben, a land defense between Baabe and Sellin, was added to their defense system by the Swedes after the Thirty Years' War and in the subsequent wars of the 17th and 18th centuries and reinforced by separate entrenchments north of the trench.
In 1815 Baabe came to the Prussian province of Pomerania as part of New Western Pomerania . From 1818 to 1952 Baabe belonged to the district of Rügen .
Baabe has been hosting bathers since the end of the 19th century. In 1895/96 a simple bathroom with a jetty was built. However, fishing and agriculture were the main livelihoods of the population for a long time. In 1913 a large men's, women's and family pool was built. From 1920 to 1927 the avenue leading to the Baltic Sea beach, which characterizes the town today, was built. The community leader from 1919 to 1926 was the social democrat Albert Thormann . In 1923 a small pier was built, but it was soon destroyed by the swell. During this time Baabe had about 500 inhabitants. Every year 3,000 to 4,000 bathers visited the place. The local volunteer fire department was founded in 1925. In the same year the building of the community and spa administration in Strandstraße 2 and the forest cemetery were built. The Baabe village church was built in 1929/30 .
From 1932 to 1934, a 200 m long pier was built next to a new bathing establishment, but it was destroyed by ice in 1942 and not rebuilt. From 1941 until the end of the Second World War , Baabe was a destination of the Kinderlandverschickung .
In 1953 the state organs carried out the " Rose Action " in Baabe . This aimed at the expropriation of private hotel and pension owners and fundamentally changed the ownership structure for almost 40 years.
In 1956, the administration of the Leipzig children's homes built and occupied a company holiday camp for the children of their employees.
After the political change in 1989, the appearance and the fabric of many houses were fundamentally improved.
From 1952 to 1955 Baabe was part of the Putbus district. The community then belonged to the Rügen district in the Rostock district until 1990 and in the same year became part of the Rügen district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In 2008 a memorial stone was unveiled for the former community leader Albert Thormann, who perished in Bautzen prison in 1952.
