Architecture and history

Around 1913 a bathing establishment was built on the property . In the 1930s there was a renovation and after the Second World War it was converted into a hotel and restaurant. After the restaurant had become dilapidated, a new building was decided.

The current building was built in 1966 as a café, bar and kiosk based on a design by civil engineer and entrepreneur Ulrich Müther . The roof has been designed as a mushroom shell, the base of which is on the ground floor. The roof shell is only six centimeters thick . The floor plan is square with a side length of 17.6 meters each. The appearance is characterized by a large window front and a symmetrically curved ceiling on the upper floor, which protrudes as a trapezoidal square over the ground floor.

The building was considered a prestige project of the GDR . There was a kiosk for beach supplies on the ground floor . Around the one meter thick column of the mushroom shell, Müther built a spiral staircase that leads to the upper floor. On the upper floor there was a restaurant as a milk and mocha bar . In the ceiling of the upper floor, which is also used as a disco , lamps were set flush so that they were reminiscent of a starry sky. "In the evening it was a popular venue with a musical program."

After the fall of the Wall , the building stood empty and fell into disrepair. In 2008 it was acquired by Tatenberger Bauträgergesellschaft from Kühlungsborn . A commercial building originally located to the west on the land side was demolished. From 2011 to 2013 the house was extensively renovated. The original shell construction was retained in the original, the slender steel window frames were slightly reinforced for the installation of thermal glass windows. New entrances are now on the west and south sides, the latter with a spiral staircase. The interior fittings and the ceiling lighting were renovated. On the land side, the Tatenberger property development company built a holiday complex with 123 holiday apartments, which opened in June 2013, on the site of the former Hans-Beimler-Heim and later the “Meeresblick” house. The community made it compulsory for investors to add a holiday home to enable year-round management of the restaurant.

After the renovated building was initially vacant due to a lack of operators, there has been a high-quality gastronomic offer from the new leaseholder, the Sicilian restaurateur Francesco Galeano, since 2017. The restaurant on the upper floor seats 95 guests and offers panoramic views of the Baltic Sea and the coastline.

In close proximity to the island paradise there are two other structures with mushroom shells by Müther along the beach promenade. A circular pavilion ( kiosk ) was built in the local spa gardens about 100 m to the south . Its roof is an eight-meter-wide mushroom shell and is only supported by a column in the middle of the shop. Together with the West German civil engineer Stefan Polónyi , Müther carried out this building in 1971 as a test construction.

Another mushroom shell covers the swimming pool in the "Cliff Hotel Rügen - Resort & Spa" (1977) in Sellin , about one kilometer north of Baabe. There the bowl hangs freely and is covered with a short, transparent tube at the very bottom because of the rainwater drainage.
