Stefan Polónyi
Stefan Polónyi (born July 6, 1930 in Gyula / Hungary ) is a German civil engineer and author . It was best known for its folded and shell constructions and its arched structures.
life and work
Stefan Polónyi studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Budapest and moved to Cologne in 1956 after four years as a research assistant in Budapest . In 1957 he opened his own office there (Stefan Polónyi & Partner, later Polonyi and Fink, then IPP Prof. Polonyi + Partner). In 1965 he was appointed professor for structural engineering at the TU Berlin , where he set up the institute for model statics . In 1971 he was appointed to the University of Dortmund , where he played a key role in the establishment of the construction department and the development of the “ Dortmund Model ”, a joint training program for engineers and architects. Polónyi retired in 1995 in Dortmund.
In 1997, the Architecture and Engineers Association (AIV) Cologne honored him with the AIV plaque “For services to our built environment”. In 1999 the TU Berlin awarded him the title of "Dr.-Ing. E. h. ". It was the third honorary doctorate for him, after the Technical University of Budapest and the University of Kassel had already awarded him it.
“Polónyi never saw the engineer's work as that of a technocratic handyman, but rather as a structural engineering. The spirited lateral thinker always referred to the engineer's cultural obligations and consistently implemented this in his designs. This amalgamation of scientific and intuitive influences can be seen, for example, in the glass hall at the Leipzig trade fair or in the St. Suitbert church in Essen-Überruhr, which he designed together with the architect Josef Lehmbrock. "
Stefan Polónyi lives in Cologne.
