Location of the municipality of Nienhagen in the Rostock district | ||
The Ostseebad Nienhagen is a municipality in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is administered by the Bad Doberan-Land office based in Bad Doberan .
geography
The community is located on the Baltic coast between Heiligendamm and Rostock- Warnemünde . Large parts of the municipality are forested. To the west of the village is the Nienhäger Holz directly on the approximately twelve meter high cliff . The unstoppable erosion by wind and water means that around 25 cm of the cliffs break away every year.
The mixed forest, which is popularly known as the “ghost forest” and bordering the village, is around 180 hectares in size. The origin of this designation is not precisely proven, but is probably due to the 1.25 kilometers long and around 100 meters wide coastal section of the forest, which consists primarily of beeches and some oaks. The beeches in particular are deformed by the sea breeze, often have a one-sided growth and snake-like twisted branches, which gives the forest a ghostly appearance at dusk and in fog.
Immediately behind the "Ghost Forest" begins a very scenic hiking trail that runs along the steep coast and leads to the village of Börgerende . The effects of coastal erosion in this section of the Baltic Sea coast are serious.
One and a half kilometers from the coast in the Baltic Sea is the artificial reef Nienhagen, which is used for research purposes .
history
Nienhagen was first mentioned in a document in 1264. Like many other place names in the surrounding Hägerort, the name -hagen denotes a cleared forest area. Knight Gherhardus de Snakenborg (Gerhard von Schnakenburg) gave his fiefdom back to the Doberan Cistercian monastery . Further documents from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries attest to agriculture. With the secularization of the monastery property after the Reformation , the area became the domain of the ducal household in the Duchy of Mecklenburg . In 1670 this "Meierhof" is described in detail.
The formation of a community Nienhagen did not take place until the end of the 19th century through the merger of the three Hufen of the previous domain with the four hereditary leaseholds, five Büdners and 15 cottagers in the neighboring small village.
The profitable development of bathing on the coast in 1906 prompted the village mayor at the time to parcel out parts of his field at the edge of the forest for the establishment of guest houses. The development took place immediately with a hotel and several guest houses. 1906 is the year in which the farming village of Nienhagen developed into a seaside resort. The bathing hosts founded a bathing club in 1909, in 1929 Nienhagen received the concession to "exercise the seaside resort", and in 1936 it was officially recognized by the state as a seaside resort. A pier (1912 to 1929) and an observation tower (1912 to approx. 1922) increased the attractiveness of the place. Further development was hampered by wars and inflation.
Nevertheless, the number of inhabitants increased steadily: Around 1900: 100, 1920: 300, 1990: 770. In the following years up to 2000, the number of inhabitants rose to 1800 through the construction of many single-family and multi-family houses. There was also a larger complex with holiday homes .
