history

Old barn in Rethwisch

The village of Rethwisch was first mentioned in a document in 1297. In 1299 a clergyman from the Doberan monastery was employed in Rabenhorst. In the war damage calculation of 1312 on the damage caused by the conflict between the Rostockers under Nikolaus and the troops of Henry the Lion , an administrator (magister curie) of the Doberan monastery , as well as a churchyard and sexton, was mentioned. In addition to the manager, there were around twenty households in the village at that time, all of which had German names. 1353 was first written by a church as "capella Redwisch", a year later as "ecclesia Redewisch". It was mentioned that the church was previously located in Rabenhorst, but had now taken its seat in Rethwisch. After the Reformation , in 1552 the monastery property was transferred to the lordly Domanialverband.

The independent communities Börgerende Rethwisch and merged on June 20, 1957, changed simultaneously by the district Rostock-Land in the district of Bad Doberan .

The FDGB rest home “Waterkant” was the largest hotel in GDR times . It was opened on August 11, 1976 and had 462 beds, a restaurant with 240 seats, a swimming pool and several medical facilities. The building, which had been vacant shortly after the fall of the Wall , fell into ruins and was demolished in 2008. At this point holiday apartments were built.

As a relic from the GDR era, there is the listed Baltic Sea border tower Börgerende , one of the last two surviving watch towers on the Baltic Sea.

Artists in the field of ceramics, graphics and visual arts offer their products to tourists in the art barn .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Börgerende-Rethwisch
Blazon : “Divided by a wave cut; above in silver two diagonally crossed red gable boards with turned away horse heads; a silver fish below in blue. "

The coat of arms and the flag were designed by the Schwerin heraldist Heinz Kippnick . It was approved together with the flag on August 9, 2000 by the Ministry of the Interior and registered under the number 223 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Reasons for the coat of arms: In the coat of arms, the wave cut symbolizes the location of the municipality on the Baltic Sea. The gable boards refer to the Lower Saxon farmhouses in the village. The fish creates a connection to one of the residents' main sources of income in the past, to fishing in Börgerende.

flag

The flag is evenly striped lengthways in blue and white. In the middle of the flag, at two thirds of the height of the blue and white stripes, is the municipal coat of arms. The length of the flag is related to the height as 5: 3.

Official seal

The official seal shows the municipal coat of arms with the inscription "• GEMEINDE BÖRGERENDE - RETHWISCH •".
