In the 1930s, Matgendorf, Schwetzin and Groß Wüstenfelde were settled by Rhinelanders, Oldenburgers and other West German Catholic farmers. The Catholic chapel in Schwetzin was established in 1930, followed by the Catholic parish church in Matgendorf in 1952.
