Name and coat of arms

The place name is of Slavic origin ( "crepelita" - quail field or "crepelice" - quail place). The name derivation from the term cripple is folk etymology . The coat of arms is a talking coat of arms , which is not based on the language root, but the pictorial implementation of the city name.

middle Ages

The first documentary mention was made in 1177 as Crapelin . The church village was designated as a Doberan monastery property in 1186. From a German village near the old Slavic settlement, a regular city system was created, oriented in an east-west direction. In a deed of donation from Prince Heinrich Borwin III. Kröpelin was first referred to as a city (oppidum) on August 25, 1250. The granting of the town charter of the city of Lübeck is accepted for the year before, i.e. 1249. Therefore, it was decided to celebrate the round city anniversaries a year before, for example the 750th anniversary in 1999.

Kröpelin became a country town in Mecklenburg and until 1918 was represented as part of the towns of the Mecklenburg district on state parliaments. The town church dates from the 13th century with the choir , the nave from the 14th and the tower from the 15th century. The upper floor of the tower and the spire were built in 1883.

Since the 19th century

At the beginning of the 19th century, Jews settled in Kröpelin, who in 1821 set up the Jewish cemetery in the Kahlwiesen . During the November pogrom of 1938 it was desecrated by the Nazis and then fell into disrepair until its remains were later given a memorial stone to commemorate the Jewish victims of fascism in the Shoah .

From 1952 to 2011 Kröpelin belonged to the Bad Doberan district (until 1990 in the GDR district of Rostock , 1990–2011 in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). The city has been in the Rostock district since 2011 .

The city center and town hall have been thoroughly renovated since 1991 as part of the urban development subsidy.

Until June 13, 2004, the city was a member and seat of the office of Kröpelin .

Incorporations

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities Brusow and Detershagen were incorporated. Altenhagen, Jennewitz and Schmadebeck were added on June 13, 2004.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was established on April 10, 1858 by Friedrich Franz II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and registered under the number 66 of the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On March 24, 1997, the city council decided to introduce the current coat of arms, which was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on June 8, 1999.

Blazon : “In blue a cripple crawling to the left with a silver robe, natural flesh color (exceptional color), with a golden cone hat, silver hair and golden blocks on the lower legs and in the hands; above the cripple a golden shield, leaning to the left, with a black bull's head with silver horns and a golden crown of prince, of which five prongs are visible. "

The crawling disabled person is represented in the Kröpelin seal with the bull's head as early as 1306. The black bull's head in the coat of arms represents the affiliation to the state of Mecklenburg through the reference to the Rostock branch line of the Mecklenburg princely house.

The coat of arms was redrawn by Michael Zapfe from Weimar and the color of the details changed.

Town twinning

A partnership has existed since 1990 with the Lower Saxony municipalities of Hude and Schwarmstedt and with the French city of Arnage , a southern suburb of Le Mans in the Sarthe department . In 2003 a town twinning with the Polish city of Włoszakowice in the powiat Leszczyński was concluded.
