The mill is one of the gallery Dutch mills . It is named after the surrounding gallery, which was necessary to reach the wings. This was necessary to operate the windmill, but not possible from the ground. The brick substructure with the gallery is two-story. Above this is the eight-sided mill body, which also consists of two floors, with the hood on top. The mill body and the hood are covered with larch shingles.

The vertical shaft running through the mill is still there and the comb wheel and bunker are still in the hood. The replica wings and the hood can still be turned by hand.

history

Construction of the mill began in 1904. The construction costs for the Käding family amounted to 30,000 gold marks. The mill started operating in 1906 and grain was ground until 1952. In the 1970s the mill was rebuilt and used for polytechnic lessons . In 1986 the mill was extensively reconstructed. A future use as a restaurant was planned, a corresponding renovation began and a two-story utility wing was added. However , this work came to a standstill after the fall of the Wall . From 2012 to 2013 the mill was renovated and the farm wing dismantled. The total cost of this measure was 683,000 euros, of which the city of Kröpelin, as the owner, contributed 171,000 euros. The mill association founded in 2005 received a cooperation agreement from the city of Kröpelin and has been operating the mill since 2013. The mill is used for exhibitions and the first floor is dedicated as a wedding room.

The retractable mill

The nickname "retractable" mill results from a geographical peculiarity. Kröpelin was built in hilly terrain and depending on where you are, the mill is visible or hidden behind buildings that are actually lower than the mill. This phenomenon becomes particularly clear when coming from the west along the main road. The mill is then in the line of sight to the east and initially towers over the surrounding buildings. If you move towards the mill, the mill "sinks". The effect is reinforced by the fact that it initially appears behind the houses on the left side of the street due to a bend in the street, but is actually to the right of the street.
