history

The place Lelkendorf appears for the first time in a document as early as 1225. The feud Lelkendorf was from 1224 to 1945 in the family of Levetzow . The manor house, which dates back to the 13th century, burned down the troops from Wallenstein in 1629. The new manor house ( castle ) Lelkendorf, a renaissance plastered building , was built soon after 1629. In 1898, the renovation was carried out in the Tudor style according to plans by Paul Schultze-Naumburg . The last owner of the estate and manor house was the Baron von Levetzow in 1945; his descendants and others bought the manor in 1990. The architect and businessman Joachim von Levetzow (* 1943) converted parts of the palace complex into condominiums and founded the Kultur pro Regio association in 2003 (including temporary art gallery, theater performances).

On January 1, 1951, the previously independent communities of Groß Markow, Küsserow and Sarmstorf as well as the district of Klein Wüstenfelde were incorporated into the dissolved community of Gehmkendorf.

In 1993 a zoo with farm animals threatened with extinction was opened in Lelkendorf .
