Groß Markow is a district of the municipality Lelkendorf in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
Geographical location
Groß Markow is located southwest of the community center in Mecklenburg Switzerland . The country town of Neukalen is to the west, Malchin to the south and Alt Sührkow to the south-west . The Peene flows south of the district .
history
The place was first mentioned in a document in 1314. Klein Markow, located to the northwest, was probably a Slavic settlement, while Groß Markow was a German settlement.
The place was owned by the von Levetzow family for many centuries . In 1829 they built a mansion and had a park laid out. As ruler of the place also owned the church patronage . At her behest, craftsmen built the Groß Markow church in 1840 . During the Second World War , the owners were expropriated and initially refugees were housed in the manor house. It then served as a branch of a hospital in Teterow . Groß Markow was incorporated into Lelkendorf with effect from January 1, 1951 . From 1965 until the fall of the Berlin Wall , the manor house served as a nursing home and has since been used as a holiday home.

- Neo-Gothic church Groß Markow with stained glass from Ferdinand Müller's glass painting establishment and a marble angel holding a baptismal font. The baptismal angel by Bertel Thorvaldsen in the cathedral in Copenhagen served as a model . To the east of the apse is the family grave of the von Levetzow family.
- A row of oak trees on the road to Alt Sührkow is protected as an FFH area .

The place is mainly characterized by agriculture and tourism. In addition to an organic farm and other agricultural businesses, the manor house serves as accommodation for tourists.
traffic
Coming from the southwest towards the northeast, Teterower Strasse runs through the village and connects Alt Sührkow with Lelkendorf. From the village green there is a connection to Pohnstorf via the Pohnstorfer Weg to the south ; north towards Klein Markow. Line 246 of the Rostock regional bus connects the town with Jördenstorf and Teterow.
