Attractions

Chapel in Juergenshagen

The Gothic chapel in Jürgenshagen was rebuilt in 1891 and replaced a half-timbered church that had burned down. The chapel has no tower, the bell hangs in a roof overhang on the west side of the building.

Prince Borwin I had the manor house in the Gnemern district built around 1218–1223 as a moated castle to protect the land trade route between Rostock and Wismar. Owners were the noble families de Gnemare, Preen , Finecke , Reventlow , Vieregge and Oertzen . From 1661 to 1945 it was owned by the Barons von Meerheimb . After the castle had lost its military importance, it was destroyed by fire in 1676. After that, a new manor house was built between 1682 and 1685, which is one of the rare early baroque country houses in Mecklenburg with almost unchanged substance. While from the outside it has largely retained the form of rural early baroque, the interior was furnished in a historicist style at the end of the 19th century. The renovation of the building began in 1981. The mansion became a cultural center, the development of which was interrupted in 1989. Helmut Freiherr von Maltzahn , who has already rebuilt Ulrichshusen Castle as a hotel and saved Gützkow Castle from deterioration, has owned the house of his Meerheimb's ancestors since 2011 . As the new owner, he wants to revitalize the building in need of renovation, including the outdoor facilities. The house is currently under restoration (2019).
