The village church Baabe is the Protestant church of the Baltic Sea resort Baabe on Rügen .

history

Initially, the small village of Baabe belonged to the parish of Middelhagen, about four kilometers away, and the local St. Katharinen Church . At the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century, Baabe began to develop into a seaside resort . The pastor Medenwald introduced open-air services in Baabe, especially for the increasing number of bathing guests. However, there were plans to build a permanent church.

The foundation stone was laid on July 11, 1929. The design for the church came from the Berlin architect Erhard Schmidt , who was a regular spa guest in town for years. The local building contractor Albert Ewert was responsible for the construction. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on September 20, 1929, the inauguration on June 24, 1930. The church received three bells with the inscriptions O country, country, hear the word of the Lord! ' Be reconciled to God! and all that breathes, praise the Lord! .

Already on April 23, 1933 shortly after the seizure of power of the Nazis , the parish led the planting of a Hitler-oak and a Hindenburg -oak. Both trees are still standing in front of the church today, albeit without a name.

On April 1, 1950, the Baabe parish was detached from Middelhagen and incorporated as a subsidiary of the Sellin parish .

In 1958 the church received a bell ringer through the aid organization of the Evangelical Church . In 1968 an organ was purchased. According to another statement, the Frankfurt company W. Sauer Orgelbau did not build the small organ until 1969. In 1971 the tower roof was re-covered. The belfry has been repainted. In 1987, the tower roof had to be repaired in-house. Church and facade were renovated.

During the time of political change in the GDR , the church served as a space for residents' assemblies. As early as 1987 an exhibition The conciliar process for justice, peace and the salvation of creation took place with numbers and data material that was critical in the GDR.

In the years from 1993 to 1997, various renovation measures took place. The pillars of the vestibule received protection against rising damp, the nave and tower were re-covered, and the roof structure was renewed. The semicircular entrance to the church was re-paved as part of an AB measure . In May 2001 the facade was renovated again.

To mark the 10th anniversary of German unity , a memorial was unveiled on the forecourt of the church on October 3, 2000 with the inscription: In memory of the victims of all wars, dictatorships, racial and political persecution, flight and expulsion .

On January 1st, 2003 the parish of Baabe formed a parish union with the parishes of Sellin and Lancken-Granitz .

In 2003 the water supply to the church was relocated. In 2004, the gallery inside the church was separated from the rest of the nave by a wall in order to obtain a meeting room.

The Sankt Michaelis congregation in Bremen was a partner congregation of the church as early as the GDR era .

architecture

The vault of the simple church is reminiscent of a keel-up boat. The same goes for the windows. An outside pulpit in the southeast corner of the church is unusual . It goes back to the time and the ancient tradition of open-air worship. However, it has probably never been used in the decades since the church was founded.

organ

The organ was built in 1969 by Wilhelm Sauer (Frankfurt / Oder) in 1969. The purely mechanical grinding loading -instrument has four Manual register (Holzgedackt 8 ', Flute tube 4', principal 2 ', Scharff II-III). The instrument has no pedal .

local community

The Protestant parish has been part of the Stralsund Propstei in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany since 2012 . Before that she belonged to the Stralsund parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .
