The former municipality of Middelhagen had an area of 9.62 km² and 603 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015). It was administered by the Mönchgut-Granitz office based in the municipality of Baabe . The last mayor was Ulrich Kliesow.
history
Old Reddevitz
The place became famous for a large stone grave in its local area, the "Duke's Grave". It can still be seen today and has been excavated several times. Many finds were recovered. The large stone grave was excavated by Klinghardt in 1926. On the northern end stone there are two bowls 3 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm deep. On the surface of the girder of the western girder stones, which is located next to the northern end stone, there are four easily recognizable bowls 3.5 cm in diameter and 1 cm deep. The duke's grave is one of the most famous large stone graves in Rügen. It was discovered before 1922 by the late teacher and local researcher Fritz Worm from Alt Reddevitz. Following an old legend, he excavated several boulder blocks on the way from Mönchgut to Alt Reddevitz. Then he came across the stones surrounding the burial chamber. It was the burial place of a clan from the Neolithic Age. Nine blocks with the smooth sides inward encompass the chamber. The north wall is supported by a large block. The entrance in the south consists of 2 vertical stone slabs. The chamber floor consisted of layers of stone and clay. The dead were buried one on top of the other; 38–40 skeletons could be identified. 50 clay vessels, amber beads in 80 places and many flint utensils were among the additions. Today the grave is quite unspectacular, but the finds back then with the large number of buried individuals were a sensation.
Praise
The village is located southeast of Middelhagen on the highway towards Thiessow in the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve .
Middelhagen
Middelhagen was first mentioned in a document around 1250.
The place was part of the Principality of Rügen until 1326 and then the Duchy of Pomerania . With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, Rügen and thus also the area of Lancken-Granitz became part of Swedish Pomerania . In 1815 Middelhagen came to the Prussian province of Pomerania as part of New Western Pomerania .
Since 1818 Middelhagen belonged to the district or district of Rügen , only in the years 1952 to 1955 it belonged to the district of Putbus . The community then belonged to the Rügen district in the Rostock district until 1990 and became part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the same year. The district of Rügen, which has been called this again since 1990, was merged in 2011 in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen.
On January 1, 2018, Middelhagen merged with Gager and Thiessow to form the new Mönchgut community.
