Gager is a district of the community Mönchgut in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ( Germany ). Until 2018, Gager was an independent municipality with the Groß Zicker district .

Gager is located on the Mönchgut peninsula in the southeastern tip of Rügen on the south coast of the Hagenschen Wiek and on the north coast of the Zicker See . These are two bays in the northeast of the Greifswald Bodden . The village borders directly on the ridge of the Zicker Mountains , the highest of which is the Bakenberg (66 m). The mountain is located, as the entire Zickerschen mountains, in the sub-region Zicker the conservation area Mönchgut .

Former parish

The former municipality of Gager had an area of ​​8.71 km² and 388 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015). It was administered by the Mönchgut-Granitz office based in the municipality of Baabe . The last mayor was Peter Quilitzsch.

The place was part of the Principality of Rügen until 1326 and then the Duchy of Pomerania .

With the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, Rügen and with it the town of Gager became part of Swedish Pomerania . In 1815 the municipality and Western Pomerania came to the Prussian province of Pomerania .

From 1818 Gager belonged to the district or district of Rügen , from 1952 to 1955 to the district of Putbus and then until 1990 to the district of Rügen in the Rostock district . It then became part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The district of Rügen became part of the Vorpommern-Rügen district in 2011.

On January 1, 2018, Gager merged with Middelhagen and Thiessow to form the new Mönchgut community.

The coat of arms was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on October 16, 1998 and registered under the number 172 of the coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Movie

In 1980 DEFA shot the documentary “The other three seasons”, directed by Kurt Tetzlaff, about the towns of Groß Zicker and Gager and the life of the villagers. The town's mayor and residents give an insight into their lives. The DEFA fairy tale film “The Blue Light” was filmed in the landscapes around Gager and Groß Zicker in 1975 under the direction of Iris Gusner .
