Life and accomplishments

Alfred Haas was born on July 8, 1860 in Bergen on Rügen, the son of a district secretary. From 1872 to 1878 he attended the Putbus pedagogy on Rügen . He then studied ancient languages and history at the University of Greifswald . In 1884 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate, in 1885 he passed the examination for the higher teaching post. After teaching at various schools in Szczecin and doing his military service as a one-year volunteer in Greifswald , he became a teacher at the Städtisches Schiller-Realgymnasium in Szczecin in 1889, where he stayed until his retirement in 1925. In 1906 he received the title of high school professor .

Haas devoted himself to the history of Pomerania , but above all to folklore , especially as a collector of folk tales.

He had been a member of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology from 1885/1886 , from 1924 to 1933 as a member of the board. After founding the Rügisch-Pomeranian History Association , he became an active member there too.

From 1893 to 1902 he edited, together with Otto Knoop , the papers for Pomeranian Folklore . It was the first ethnographic specialist journal to appear for a German country. Due to a drop in subscriber numbers and a lack of public support, the publication of the magazine had to be stopped in 1902.

Haas is considered to be the most important collector of sagas in Western Pomerania . He collected legends already published elsewhere, as well as directly from the Pomeranian population. He published extensive collections of sagas as books. His two volumes, Rügen Legends and Pomeranian Legends , were reissued in numerous numbers.

In 1944, Haa's apartment in Szczecin was destroyed in a bomb attack. He moved to his younger brother's home in Bergen, where he died on July 27, 1950.
