The St. Marien Church is the church of the Evangelical Church Community of Bergen on Rügen , which belongs to the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District and has around 1,600 members. It is the oldest building in the city of Bergen on Rügen and, along with the Altenkirchen parish church, the oldest building on the island of Rügen .

history

Construction of the church, a Romanesque basilica with a transept, began around 1180 under the Rügen prince Jaromar I. His plans to expand the church into a palatinate, Jaromar had to give up because of the disfavour of his Danish lords. That is why the church was consecrated in 1193 as a monastery church for Benedictine nuns . In 1380 it also became a parish church.

The long nave in the form of a three-aisled hall with five bays and the upper floor of the transverse building date from the Gothic period (14th century). One of the most important pieces of equipment nationwide is the artfully crafted Communion chalice and the baptismal font from the 14th century. The chandelier (17th century), the altar (1730) and the pulpit (1776) date from the Baroque period . The Romanesque wall paintings of the church are the only example of a complete painting of a church in Northern Germany. They were restored by August Oetken in 1896–1903 .

The large bell of the church was cast after a major fire in 1445 and weighs about three tons.

organ

The two-manual organ of the church was built in 1909 by Barnim Grüneberg and rebuilt in 1945 by the Schuke company. In 2007 the instrument was restored by the organ workshop Christian Scheffler from Sieversdorf and brought to the state of 1909. It has 28 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

Oddities

Choir: frescoes (12th century, restored 1896–1903) depicting the prophet Ezekiel with a quote: "I want to give you a new heart" (Eze. 36:26)

The clock face of the church tower clock on the north side has been divided into 61 minutes since the restoration in 1983. A hurricane damaged the clock. When the workers were done with the renewal, there was a gap in the minute displays between 11 and 12, so they just put another marker on. St. Marien is probably the only church in Germany with a clock showing 61 minutes.

The head of the monk next to the main portal should be on the same level as the top of the Marienkirche in Stralsund, according to old travel guides.

Immediately in front of the altar is the grave of Princess Elisabeth of Pomerania, a sister of Bogislaw X , who was the abbess of the monastery in Bergen in the 15th century.
