Alwill Baier

Alwill Baier (born September 27, 1811 in Altenkirchen (Rügen) , † September 1, 1892 in Greifswald ; full name: Alwill Hermann Baier ) was a German philosopher and theologian at the University of Greifswald .

Alwill Baier was a son of pastor Hermann Baier (1775–1822) and his wife Alwine (1789–1864), a daughter of Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten . He was raised in the home of his parents who had turned to pietism . After the unexpected death of his father, Friedrich Heinrich Ranke took over his upbringing and went with him to Nuremberg . There he attended the educational institute of the reform pedagogue Heinrich Dittmar until 1826 , where Ranke worked as a teacher. Afterwards Alwill Baier returned to Neuvorpommern and attended the Greifswald grammar school . From 1830 he studied theology at the University of Greifswald . He attended philological lectures from Georg Friedrich Schömann , a friend of his father's. He soon went to the University of Halle for a short time , where he attended Heinrich Leo's lectures . In order to listen to Hegel , he enrolled at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin for the winter semester of 1831 . However, Hegel died in November 1831 and Baier turned back to theology under Friedrich Schleiermacher , with whom he also met personally due to the common relationship with the island of Rügen .

On July 15, 1836, Alwill Baier was licensed in Greifswald . PhD . In the following year he completed his habilitation there at the theological faculty. On May 29, 1844 he became an associate professor of theology. Because of his liberal theological and moderate liberal political attitude, he was by the Prussian Ministry of Culture , even after the graduation to the Dr. theol. by the University of Kiel , the acquisition of a full theological professorship denied. Therefore, in 1856, he accepted the offer of a full professorship in the philosophical faculty. He gave lectures on speculative philosophy. In 1864 he was rector of the university.

In 1886 he was awarded the title of a secret councilor . In the last years of his life he could not leave his house because of an illness. Still interested in philosophy, history and literature, he corresponded with like-minded people such as Wilhelm Vatke (1806–1882), Karl von Hase (1800–1890) and Eduard Zeller (1814–1908). In addition, he had collected an extensive library as well as paintings and engravings .
