history

Prince Nikolaus von Werle had the castle built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the city of “Wesenberge”.

During the Mecklenburg-Brandenburg disputes ( Margrave Wars ), the castle was in changing hands from 1276.

From 1329 the Mecklenburg rulers received the Land of Stargard as a fief. In 1352 Mecklenburg-Stargard became an independent duchy under Johann von Mecklenburg . At times the castle served as the residence of Duke Ulrich II's widow . After 1500 Wesenberg Castle became a princely office.

The result of the Thirty Years' War was the extensive destruction of the castle complex, only the torso of the keep - also known as the fangel tower - and parts of the castle wall in the south remained. Around 1660, for example, the “Great House” of the castle was called uninhabitable and around 1677 it was described as completely derelict.

In 1752 the castle grounds went to the ducal chamber, in 1812 a Schulze was appointed administrator. The original house has been replaced by a simple building. This building was destroyed by fire twice and rebuilt. After 1950 the building was used for forest management.

The castle is now owned by the city. The Wesenberger tourist office is located there and a collection on fishing, forestry and regional history is shown in the Heimatstube. In addition, a castle association was founded in Wesenberg in 1994.
