from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard] (* 1326 ; † between August 9, 1392 and February 9, 1393 ) was lord (prince) from 1344 to 1348, duke of Mecklenburg from 1348 to 1352 and from 1352 to 1392 Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard].

family

He was probably the youngest child from the second marriage of Prince Heinrich II of Mecklenburg and Anna of Saxony-Wittenberg , daughter of Duke Albrecht II of Saxony-Wittenberg .

Life

Johann I, was probably born in 1326 and was under guardianship for the first few years. After coming of age in 1344, he took part in the government and began to use a seal. On July 8, 1348, Charles IV and his brother Albrecht II made him ducal in Prague. With his brother, like Charles IV , he initially supported the false Woldemar , but reconciled with the Margrave Ludwig in 1350 . When Mecklenburg was divided on November 25, 1352, the states of Stargard, Sternberg and Eldenburg (Lübz) with the state of Ture were awarded to him.

He supported his nephew Albrecht III. in asserting his claims as the Swedish king.

He married three times. His first wife Rixa (of unknown origin) likely died soon after the wedding and the marriage remained childless. His second wife Anna was a daughter of Count Adolf VII von Pinneberg and Schauenburg . He had a child with her, Anna. She probably died in 1358. His third wife Agnes was the daughter of Ulrich II von Lindow-Ruppin and widow of Messrs Nikolaus IV von Werle . He married her probably as early as 1358 and had five children with her.
