Johann II (Mecklenburg-Stargard)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann II, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard] (* before 1370 ; † between July 6 and October 9, 1416 ) was Duke of Mecklenburg from 1392 / 1393-1416 , from 1408 Lord of Stargard , Sternberg , Friedland , Fürstenberg and Lychen .

family

He was the oldest child from the third marriage of Duke Johann I and his wife Agnes.

biography

Johann II was probably born before 1370 and only ruled together with his brother Ulrich I and Albrecht I († 1397).

He supported his cousin Albrecht III. in enforcing his claims as the Swedish king. He probably also acted as the leader of the Vitalien Brothers here .

The Germans had 900 riflemen; the leader's name was Enis, a German, a relative of Albrecht; another was called 'Maekingborg', also a relative of Albrecht. "

It is very likely that “Maekingborg” was Johann II, and “Enis” was Johann IV von Schwerin .

In 1408 he shared the land with his brother Ulrich and got Sternberg, Friedland, Fürstenberg and Lychen. He made the former his residence. He is also buried in Sternberg, where he probably also died. He was married to Katharine ( Wilheida ), daughter of the Grand Duke Algirdas ( Olgierd ) of Lithuania, whom he married in 1388.
