Mecklenburg-Stargard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The (partial) duchy of Mecklenburg-Stargard came into being after the death of Heinrich II , Duke of Mecklenburg . On November 25, 1352, his two sons, Dukes Albrecht II (the Great) and Johann I, agreed to divide the paternal inheritance by means of a house contract . This brought about the two partial dominions Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Stargard, designated according to common practice with the name of the dynastic main estate (Mecklenburg), to which the name of the respective main residence ( Schwerin , Stargard ) was added.

This division of power was not recognized under imperial or feudal law. Logically, both rulers of the resulting partial rulers titled equally as "hertoge thu Meklenborch, thu Stargarde vnd thu Rozstok here" . This title was retained until 1918 in the overall title of the Mecklenburg monarchy in the formulation "( Grand ) Duke of Mecklenburg , [...] the state of Rostock and Stargard Herr" .

territory

The main part of the (partial) duchy of Mecklenburg-Stargard comprised the Stargard rule in what is now the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , an area in the border area between Brandenburg, Pomerania and Mecklenburg. The partial rule was named after the medieval castle in (Burg) Stargard . Smaller areas were Sternberg and the Eldenburg ( Lübz ) with the historic Lande Ture.

history

The Stargard rule came to Mecklenburg as Wittum in 1299 . Heinrich II was able to maintain the rule in the Margrave War against the Margraviate of Brandenburg . After his death in 1329 and his guardianship until 1336, his sons ruled together at first. On November 25, 1352, the brothers agreed on a division of power. Johann I was awarded "dat land tho stargarde mit al deme, dat darto horte" . The land was divided again in 1408 under his sons Johann II and Ulrich I. Johann got Sternberg, Friedland, Fürstenberg and Lychen and Ulrich got Neubrandenburg, (Burg) Stargard, Strelitz and Wesenberg (with the license). Under Heinrich , the son of Ulrich I, the (partial) duchy was reunited before it was reunited with Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1471 after the death of his childless son Ulrich II .

The Stargard rule became the heart of the newly formed (partial) duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in the course of the third main division of Mecklenburg in 1701 .
