Heinrich (Mecklenburg-Stargard)

Heinrich, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard] (* before 1412 ; † between May 26 and August 20, 1466 ) was ruling prince from 1417 to 1466 as lord of Mecklenburg-Stargard with Neubrandenburg , Stargard , Strelitz and Wesenberg (with the license). Also called "the elder" to distinguish it from Duke Heinrich IV .

Life

Heinrich was born before 1412 as the youngest child of Duke Ulrich I and his wife Margerete. He ruled, initially under tutelage, in Neubrandenburg. In 1436 he, his cousin Johann III. , Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard], and Heinrich IV. , Duke of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin], the rule of Werle . After the death of Johann III. he ruled again over the entire (partial) duchy of Mecklenburg-Stargard .

Heinrich was seen as a warlike ruler and his neighbors as a bad robber. Thomas Kantzow wrote:

"Diesser Heinnrich often roamed the Marck and Land in Stetin, and what grieves all the cows that are in other countries, and drove them to his country, so that Hertzog Jochim of Stettin was amazed, where he liked to leave all Hewte, and Therefore, allied himself with Marggraff Fridrich and his cousin Hertzog Barnim von Bart, who they wanted to taste his cows again, and won in Waldeck, Lichen and Galembeck in 1440. After that it was tolerated, so that Marggraf Lichem kept and the others reimbursed the damage . "

Under his reign, the Peace of Wittstock was concluded in 1442 , which permanently fixed the borders of the Mecklenburg state territory in the southeast.

Marriages and offspring

Heinrich was married three times:

  • (1.) with Jutta († 1427), daughter of Prince Nikolaus V. von Werle-Waren
  • (2.) with Ingeburg a daughter of Duke Bogislaw VIII of Pomerania
  • (3.) from 1452 with Margarete daughter of Duke Friedrich (the elder or the pious) of Braunschweig-Lüneburg

Children from these marriages were:

  1. Ulrich II. , Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard]
  2. Margarete († before 1451)
  3. Magdalene († April 2, 1532) ∞ Wartislaw X. of Pomerania
  4. Anna, nun in the Ribnitz Monastery († January 7, 1498)
