Ivan Murray Johnston

Ivan Murray Johnston (born February 28, 1898 in Los Angeles , † May 31, 1960 in Jamaica Plain , Massachusetts ) was an American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ IMJohnst. "; earlier the abbreviation “ Johnst. " in use.

Live and act

Johnston was born in 1898 and studied at Pomona College in Claremont, California from 1916 to 1919 . During his studies, he began collecting plants and grasses in Southern California, especially Los Angeles County ; he developed a particular preference for plants on swampy soils. His talent was quickly discovered and particularly encouraged by Samuel Bonsall Parish (1838–1928).

In 1925 he moved to Boston to continue his studies at Harvard University ; he stayed there until his death in 1960. The plants he collected in California are kept in the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in Claremont; the Massachusetts collections are now in the Gray Herbarium at Harvard University.

Harvard itself Johnston specialized in the family of Borage Family (Boraginaceae), which he entitled Studies in the Boraginaceae wrote 31 scientific publications. He was able to describe 215 new species in the family for the first time , which corresponds to about 10% of all predatory plants. In 1927 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Dedication names

His classes were in honor of Johnston Ella fire , Ivanjohnstonia Kazmi and Sinojohnstonia Hu from the plant family of Borage Family (Boraginaceae) and Ivania OESchulz from the family of cruciferous named (Brassicaceae).

The kind epithets of the plant species Arabis johnstonii Munz , Galium johnstonii Dempster & Stebbins , Mimulus johnstonii A.L. Grant and Peniocereus johnstonii Britton & Rose are named after him.
