biography

Ulrich II was probably born before 1428 and only ruled together with his father Heinrich. After his father's death in 1466, he assumed sole rule.

Through the mediation of the Hanseatic cities, especially through the Mayor of Stralsund Otto Voge , an amicable agreement was reached.

He was married to Katherine, daughter of Prince Wilhelm von Werle . The wedding planned for 1446 only came about after lengthy disputes over the bride's treasure as a result of the Ribnitz Treaty of February 24, 1454. The starting point was the inheritance dispute after the death of the Pomeranian Duke Barnim VIII in 1451 over the inheritance of Barnim VIII's sister, Sophia von Pomerania. It was claimed as a dowry for their wedding. This affected the countries of Zingst, Barth and Damgarten, which Barnim VIII had pledged to his niece Katharine for 20,000 guilders. The exact wedding day is not known, but it should have been between February 24th (conclusion of the contract) and September 15, 1454 (first documented mention of Katharine as wife). According to documents, Katharine was still alive on July 21, 1475.

There is a good source about his death: Item in dessem iare, by sunte Margareten (July 13), starf hertich Olrich van Stargarden; vnde wente he nyne hinder naleth, dat mansnames weren, so red Hinrick [IV.] van Mekelenborch in dat laut unde let sik huldegen van den guden luden unde van den steden unde van deme gansen lande alse eneme right ruler of the country (Lübische Chronik bei Grautoff II, p. 337). Ulrich II was buried in the Wanzka monastery. As with Ulrich I , there were rumors that he had been poisoned. Ulrich II is buried at Wantzke in the monastery, and there his sword, helmet and coat of arms are attached, and for several years the epitaph for Duke Ulrichs hochsel. Latomus reports (in Westph. IV, Col. 399, 400) the memory of Mylio's request, his secret council .

Ulrich II was the last Duke of Mecklenburg [-Stargard]. After his death, the Stargard rule fell back to the ruling line of the dynasty under Heinrich IV in the Duchy of Mecklenburg .
