Wilhelm (Werle)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm, Prince of Wenden (* before 1393 or 1394; † September 8, 1436 near Güstrow ), was co-regent from 1418 to 1436, then from 1425 sole lord of Werle-Güstrow . From 1426 he headlined as Prince zu Wenden.

He was the son of Lorenz von Werle-Güstrow and Mechthild von Werle-Goldberg.

After the death of his father in 1393 or 1394, only his older brother Balthasar took over the reign of the Werle-Güstrow rule. Wilhelm himself became co-regent in 1418 and after the death of his brother on April 5, 1421 sole lord of Werle-Güstrow. After the death of Christoph Herr zu Werle-Waren in 1425, he also became ruler there. He was now master of the entire Werle rule . Since 1426 he has held the title of Prince of Wenden, Lord of Güstrow, Waren and Werle .

He married Anna von Anhalt in 1422, who died in 1426. In his second marriage he married Sophie von Pomerania, the sister of Duke Barnim VIII of Pomerania. He had a child with her, Katharine von Werle. She was married to Ulrich II . With the consent of his cousins, her uncle Barnim VII pledged the lands of Barth, Zingst and Damgarten for 20,000 guilders.

After Wilhelm's death, the Werle line died out due to the lack of a male heir and the Werle rule (the principality of Wenden) fell back to the Mecklenburg dynasty. The title Fürst zu Wenden was later used by all Mecklenburg regents as a secondary title.
