Live and act

Gronovius was the son of the classical philologist Jakob Gronovius and the grandson of Johann Friedrich Gronovius . In 1719 he married Margaretha Christina Trigland, who died in 1726. In 1729 he married Johanna Susanna Alensoon. His son Laurens Theodor Gronovius (1730–1777) was also a botanist.

Around 1730 many plants (including descriptions) were sent to him by the plant collector John Clayton . Without Clayton's knowledge, Gronovius used the scientific material in his Flora Virginica , a description of the flora of the North American state of Virginia .

In 1737 Gronovius first described the gerbera , which he named after the doctor and botanist Traugott Gerber (1710–1743). This was previously known as the African or Ethiopian aster. In 1738, Carl von Linné included the gerbera in his systematic of plants. In 1762 he mentioned the healing properties of Echinacea in his Flora Virginica .

Taxonomic honor

William Houstoun named the genus Gronovia of the plant family of the nettle family (Loasaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
