Traugott Gerber

Traugott Gerber (born January 16, 1710 in Zodel (baptized), † February 8, 1743 in Wyborg ) was a German physician and botanist . The gerbera plant genus is named after him.

Life

Traugott Gerber was born on January 16, 1710 in Zodel as the fourth child of the Zodel pastor couple Johann George Gerber and Sidonia Gerber, née. Pfeiffer, baptized. Little is known about his childhood and early adolescence. On April 29, 1730 he was registered as a medical student at the University of Leipzig . On July 29, 1735, Gerber received his doctorate for his dissertation "De Thoracibus".

He also had extensive botanical knowledge, as evidenced by various documents. From 1735 to 1742 he was a doctor in Russia and director of the oldest botanical garden in Moscow . Between 1739 and 1741 Gerber carried out several expeditions in Russia on the Don and Volga in search of medicinal plants and herbs. All handwritten documents about it are in Russian archives. In 1742 he followed the Russian army to Finland as a doctor. He died at the age of 33 in Vyborg , north of Saint Petersburg .

Others

The gerbera flower was named after Traugott Gerber by Jan Frederik Gronovius in 1735 and systematized by Carl von Linné in 1738 . It is not known how the naming came about.
