from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margarete von Braunschweig-Lüneburg (* 1442 ; † April 8, 1512 in Wienhausen ) was a princess of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg-Stargard .

Life

Margarete was a daughter of Duke Friedrich II of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1418-1478) from his marriage to Magdalene (1412-1454), daughter of Elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg .

Margarete became the third wife of Duke Heinrich von Mecklenburg-Stargard (1412–1466) in 1452 . As a bride's treasure , she brought 8,000 guilders with her, which her husband doubled again. After she became a widow, she lived from 1466 to 1471 at Plau Castle , her guaranteed treasure .

After the death of her stepson Ulrich , the Stargard line became extinct and the indebted land fell to the Mecklenburg-Schwerin House , which was not responsible for the maintenance of the Stargard widow. Margarete then lived temporarily in Celle. The dispute over their Wittum Plau between the houses of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and Mecklenburg-Schwerin dragged on until Margarete's death.

Margarete spent her 46 years of widowhood in the poorest of circumstances. In letters to her relatives, she stated that she was even hungry and thirsty. In 1499, under pressure from her father's house, the Wienhausen monastery was assigned to her as permanent residence. She was financially supported by her sister-in-law Anna , the widow of her brother Otto , in the form of only 12 guilders a year . She died in Wienhausen Monastery and was buried in the All Saints Chapel there.
