Anna of Nassau-Dillenburg

Anna von Nassau-Dillenburg (* around 1441 ; † April 8, 1513 in Celle ) was by marriage Duchess of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and regent of the Principality of Lüneburg and the last Countess of Katzenelnbogen .

Life

Anna was the eldest daughter of Count Johann IV of Nassau-Dillenburg and his wife Maria (1424–1502), daughter of Johann II of Loon, Lord of Heinsberg , Jülich and Löwenberg.

In her first marriage, Anna married on September 25, 1467 in Celle Duke Otto V. von Braunschweig-Lüneburg with whom she had two sons:

  • Wilhelm († 1470)
  • Heinrich I (1468–1532), Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg

Her husband died in 1471. A few years later, Anna's parents, together with the estates of the County of Katzenelnbogen, arranged the marriage to the already very old Count Philip I of Katzenelnbogen , whom Anna married on January 24, 1474. The estates acted out of political interest: if the marriage had resulted in an inheritance, the County of Katzenelnbogen could have avoided the House of Hesse. At the beginning of 1474 the priest Johann von Bornich was accused of having handed Countess Anna a chalice with poisoned wine on behalf of the Hessian house. Anna had a short fever and soon recovered. In 1479, after the death of Count Philipp, Katzenelnbogen fell to Heinrich von Hessen , who was married to a daughter from Philip's first marriage.

Philipp had assigned the rule of Burgschwalbach with all income as a widow's residence to his second wife . She paid for her dowry from her Wittum income as Duchess of Braunschweig, the Lüchow office , which she leased and in doing so managed to assert herself against her former father-in-law Friedrich II . She later went back to Celle and looked after her son, whom she had to leave behind in the care of her father-in-law after her second marriage, and her grandchildren. After the death of Duke Friedrich von Braunschweig in 1478, she was regent for her son Heinrich until 1486. Between 1471 and 1473, Countess Anna had the castle of the Counts of Lüchow converted into Lüchow Castle , which she used as a widow's seat from 1496 to 1504 . She is the founder of the St. Annen Hospital in Celle.
