history

Schwalbach Castle

On June 9, 790, Burgschwalbach was first mentioned in a deed of donation from Charlemagne as Squalbach .

The place received city rights on January 30, 1368 from Emperor Charles IV . Associated with this was the right to build city fortifications. According to sources without sources, Schwalbach Castle was built between 1368 and 1371 under Count Eberhard V. von Katzenelnbogen . However, due to the technical requirements at the time, this short construction period is very unlikely. There is evidence of a forge at the site for 1473, from which the Counts of Katzenelnbogen received donations.

1536 Burgschwalbach was under Count Philipp III. reformed by Nassau-Weilburg .

In 1803 the offices of Katzenelnbogen and Burgschwalbach were formed with the Kettenbach court and the village of Schiesheim to form the new Katzenelnbogen office. From 1816 Burgschwalbach belonged to the Diez office in the newly formed Duchy of Nassau . In 1866 the place became part of Prussia and has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .

The mining of iron ore in the Michelbacher Hütte has been documented since 1656 . Numerous iron ore and limestone mining companies were located in Zollhaus until the Second World War.

Except for the mill tower, nothing is left of the city wall built around 1380. As the last major section of the fortification, the gate tower was demolished in 1824 due to the risk of collapse.

The schoolhouse, which was built in 1713 and demolished at the end of the 19th century, is no longer there. In the early 1970s, the village mill was also leveled. In its place is the village square today.

The population developed as follows in the 19th and 20th centuries: 1843: 779 inhabitants, 1927: 969 inhabitants, 1964: 921 inhabitants.
