Gemmerich is a municipality in the Taunus in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the association of Nastaetten .

Gemmerich is located in the Taunus (western Hintertaunus ) in the so-called Blue Ländchen .

history

Gemmerich was first mentioned in a document on March 23, 880 in a certificate of exchange of goods between King Ludwig III, a great-grandson of Charlemagne, with the Prüm Abbey . In the 13th century, the place belonged to the four-man court of Marienfels . In 1440 the village was sold to Count Johann von Katzenelnbogen . In 1530 the Landgrave of Hesse was sovereign, in 1626 the place became part of Hesse-Darmstadt . Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 and its consequences, Gemmerich came to the Duchy of Nassau in 1806 , which was annexed by Prussia in 1866 due to the German War .

After the First World War Gemmerich was occupied until the French withdrew in 1929, at the end of the Second World War , on March 27, 1945, Gemmerich was taken by US troops. Then it came into the French occupation zone and has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .

After the administrative reform in 1969, the Loreley district (Sankt Goarshausen district) was combined with the Unterlahn district to form the new Rhein-Lahn district , to which Gemmerich also belongs.

In 2009, after three years with no shop in town, the local council decided to set up a small shop with a bakery for the account of the community ( corner shop ).

The municipal council in Gemmerich consists of twelve council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

The local mayor of Gemmerich is Mario Winterwerber. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was re-elected with 84.16% of the vote.

coat of arms

Gemmerich has had a municipal coat of arms since 1979. It shows a golden linden tree in blue on a green and silver sheathed three-mountain, accompanied on the right by a red-tongued lion head and on the left by a golden pair of hammer and mallets. Of these, the lion's head is supposed to remind of the former affiliation to the Duchy of Nassau , hammer and mallet of the mining that was previously attempted here.
