Geilnau is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Diez .

geography

Geilnau is located east of the Lahn on the "Cramberger Bogen" about 9 km southwest of Limburg an der Lahn and about 12 km southeast of Montabaur .

history

Geilnau was first mentioned in 1284. The original name Geilenowe is derived from geil = fertile, lush and owe = Au . Accordingly, the name means "fertile Au". The chapel in Geilnau was first mentioned in 1544. At the time of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the place belonged to the imperial county of Holzappel . From 1806 the place belonged to the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed by Prussia in 1866 . Around 1885 Geilnau belonged to the Unterlahn district in the Prussian administrative district of Wiesbaden and had 297 inhabitants. Since 1946 the place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Geilnau received its first elementary school in 1828. It was closed in 1969, and since then Geilnau has belonged to the catchment area of ​​the "Esterauschule" in Holzappel .

In 1790 a mineral spring that was buried by the population during the Thirty Years' War was recast. The so-called "Geilnauer Sauerwasser" was sold in large quantities between 1790 and 1894. The "Geilnau Mineral Spring" attained its greatest importance in the 1830s, afterwards the amount sold decreased, and in 1894 sales were stopped. The “Geilnauer Sauerwasser” emerged from the slate at a temperature of 10.5 ° C from springs below the Lahn bed . It had a carbonic acid content of 2.6751 g / l, a sodium carbonate content of 1.0178 g / l, an iron (II) carbonate content of 0.0011 g / l and a salt content of 0.0347 g / l. The "Geilnauer Sauerwasser" was included in the class of the so-called "iron-containing acid".

Between 1900 and 1937 and again from 1980, columnar basalt was mined in the area of ​​the local community of Geilnau . In the first half of the 20th century, up to 230 workers were temporarily employed in basalt mining.
