Location of the local community Welterod in the Rhein-Lahn district | ||
Welterod is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the association of Nastaetten .
geography
The place is located in the Taunus and has an area of 9.95 km² and around 500 inhabitants. Welterod and the neighboring villages of Strüth and Lipporn belong to the bailiwick. Welterod also includes the Hof Angschied and Ullmark residential areas .
history
Around 1117, the presumed progenitor of the Nassau family, Count Dudo von Laurenburg , transferred goods to Lipporn to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Salsator in Schaffhausen for the establishment of a convent in Lipporn, which was later combined with the Schönau monastery in the neighboring town of Strüth to form a double monastery. From 1541 to 1544 the Reformation was introduced in Strüth, Welterod and Lipporn. The Schönau monastery remained Catholic. During the Thirty Years War the place was looted several times.
In 1806 the place came into the possession of the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 . After the First World War , during the Allied occupation of the Rhineland , the town was located in a narrow corridor between the bridgeheads on the right bank of the Rhine between the Americans around Koblenz and the French around Mainz. Until the military occupation by France in 1923, the area existed as a so-called free state bottleneck . After the Second World War , the place was in the French occupation zone directly on the zone border with Hesse, which was occupied by the Americans, and has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .

Reasons for the coat of arms: The colors blue and gold are the colors of Nassau , red is the color of the Electorates of Kurmainz and Kurtrier .
Welterod is mentioned for the first time in 1132, where Count Ruprecht I von Laurenburg transfers the Schönau monastery in Strüth with all property in Welterod and Lipporn to his relative Adalbert I von Nassau, the archbishop in Mainz. The three communities mentioned together formed what is still called the Vogtei today . The Counts of Laurenburg with their ancestral castle in the Werkerbachtal near Lipporn built the castle in Nassau from 1124 to 1125 and called themselves Counts of Nassau from 1158 to 1160. It can be read that the bailiwick is located in a triangle of the administrations of Mainz (Rad), Trier (Kreuz) and Nassau (Leo). The name Welterod comes from the two words forest and clearing. Even today, almost two thirds of the community area consists of forest. The oak leaves symbolize both the three communities in the Bailiwick and the abundance of forests. |
