Altendiez is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Diez .

Altendiez is located in the central Lahn area and is geographically part of the Westerwald .

Altendiez also includes the Altendiezer Forsthaus, Haus unter dem Steinkopf and Hof Nassau residential areas .

history

Cave finds from the younger Paleolithic around 15,000 BC Chr. Testify to an early settlement in the area of ​​the municipality Altendiez. Like Diez, the place was first mentioned in a document in 790. It cannot be ruled out that the first mention of Diez Theodissa refers to Altendiez. The name Aldindietze was first mentioned in 1285. Altendiez was part of the County of Diez and was the seat of a county court .

When the Napoleonic Rhine Confederation was formed (1806), the County of Diez and thus also the parish Altendiez were incorporated into the newly established Duchy of Nassau , which it remained until the Prussian takeover in 1866. In the Prussian period Altendiez belonged to the province of Hessen-Nassau . The municipality has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946.

In addition to agriculture, mining was of importance in the 19th century . In the Altendiez district, initially iron and manganese deposits , later also lime , phosphorite and roofing slate, were mined.

In 1967, a middle school was set up in Altendiez , which became a secondary school in 1975 and existed until 2011 under the name Oranienschule Altendiez .

The Froebel School, which has existed since 1984 , a school with a special focus on learning, was closed after 30 years at the end of the 2013/14 school year.

Since autumn 2014, the newly founded Oranien- Campus Altendiez private high school , a two- tier G8 / GTS high school with Spanish as a second foreign language, has been located in the empty rooms of the former Oranienschule Altendiez .
