After the death of Philip the Magnanimous in 1567, Holzhausen first fell to Hessen-Rheinfels and, after the line there died out in 1583, to Hessen-Kassel .

During the Thirty Years' War the area was occupied by Hessen-Darmstadt in the meantime , but came back to Hessen-Kassel in 1647/1648. Until 1806 it belonged to this.

Then the Niedergrafschaft Katzenelnbogen was under French occupation and administration for 7 years ( pays réservé , 1806–1813) and thus also Holzhausen.

In 1813 it came back to Hessen-Kassel at short notice and was added to the Duchy of Nassau as a result of an exchange deal after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and 1816.
