history

Finds on the barrow field "Wildstruth", created between 800 and 500 BC. BC, indicate a long history of settlement. The settlement site called Alteburg was founded in the 5th century BC. It was laid out as a fortified site, as was shown by the findings of fire pits and broken glass during excavations in 1905.

Singhofen was mentioned for the first time in 1139 in a deed of donation from Archbishop Albero von Montreuil of Trier , which he had exhibited at a Trier diocesan synod at the end of June 1139 to establish the Arnstein Monastery . It contains the founding acknowledgment of the monastery and a list of its possessions, gifts from Count Ludwig III. von Arnstein and his wife Guda. These include three farms in Singhofen. Around 1158, Count Walram I of Nassau and Heinrich II of Katzenelnbogen jointly acquired this territory, which comprised 29 villages and to which Singoven also belonged. The manorial estate of Sinckofen was pledged to the Arnstein Abbey in 1346 .

Around 1420 there were 16 households in the village, which grew to more than 50 by the outbreak of the Thirty Years War . Three quarters of the population perished in the course of the war as a result of looting and fires; the former village center, which was located on the Kircheborn or Alten Born (source), was destroyed. By 1681 there were again 37 households.

Until 1775, the place belonged to the “ Quadrilateral Court on the Einrich ” ( Nassau-Saarbrückisches Quartier ). After its division, Singhofen became part of the triple-ruled Nassau office of Nassau . From 1806 Singhofen belonged to the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 .

The foundation stone of the Protestant church was laid on May 5, 1839. The inauguration, which more than 2000 residents were allowed to experience, then took place on December 13, 1840. It is popularly known as the "Einrichdom".

The population developed in the 19th and 20th centuries as follows: 1843: 1033 inhabitants, 1927: 994 inhabitants, 1964: 1082 inhabitants.

etymology

According to the current state of research, one is certain that Singhofen is made up of two parts of the word:

a) -hofen: from Hube, possibly always as plural: tres (three) huben (from the donation of 1139)
b) Seng-, Sing-: according to the German dictionary by Grimm there are three options:

b 1) Zingel (Singel) = fence, enclosure; Singhofen = fenced-in courtyards
b 2) Singel = small round pebbles (gravel deposits); Singhofen = farms on the gravel
b 3) Seng = clearing by fire (best explanation); Singhofen = yards of slash and burn
