The Alteburg Singhofen is a Celtic hill fort from the Latène period . It is located west of Singhofen in the Rhineland-Palatinate part of the Taunus .
Location and description
The wall, which is still clearly visible in the terrain today, lies around two kilometers west of Singhofen on a mountain ledge that drops steeply around 50 meters into the valleys of the Kernbach (north) and Mühlbach (west and south). Only to the east is there a flat transition to the ridge. This vulnerable side is protected by several walls.
The existing ramparts divide the system into three courtyards. In total, the facility takes up an area of 2.5 hectares, of which 1.0 hectares are on the first, 0.84 hectares on the second and 0.65 hectares on the third farm. In total, the system is around 350 meters long and up to 100 meters wide. The courtyards follow in a row from west to east. In this form, which is unique for the Taunus region, the existing terrain is optimally used.
The westernmost of the ramparts is 125 meters long and has a moat in front of it. The second wall, like the southwest wall, is comparatively weak.
Monument protection
The castle stable of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Protection Act. Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
