Becheln is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Bad Ems-Nassau community .
location
Becheln is an exclave of the Bad Ems community in western Hintertaunus and is located in the Nassau nature park on the Taunushöhen . The place with a view over the Rhine valley to the Hunsrück lies on the watershed between the Rhine and Lahn . Closer larger settlements are the cities of Bad Ems and Nassau (each approx. 7 km away), the city of Lahnstein (approx. 10 km) and the regional center of Koblenz (approx. 17 km).
history
In the woods around Becheln testify tumuli early settlements. Remains of the Upper German-Raetian Limes can still be seen today in the forests of the municipality of Becheln. The small Roman fort Becheln was located between Becheln and Schweighausen . Becheln itself goes back to at least the 13th century. The Romanesque church tower from the 13th century is the oldest surviving structure in Becheln.
From 1806 Becheln belonged to the Duchy of Nassau , from 1866 to Prussia . After the end of the First World War , the place belonged to the French occupation zone until 1929 .
On March 27, 1945, at around 8 a.m., Becheln was occupied by American troops of the 346th US Infantry Regiment, who had moved from Braubach / Lahnstein via Hinterwald and through the forest between Dachsenhausen and Schweighausen. No resistance was offered in Becheln. Later the US troops moved on in the direction of Dienethal , Sulzbach , Bergnassau . After the end of the war, Becheln belonged to the French occupation zone . Since 1946 it has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, from 1969 to the Rhein-Lahn district and from 1972 to the Bad Ems community.

The municipal council in Becheln consists of twelve council members, who were elected in a personalized proportional representation in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Michaela Lehmler is the local mayor of Becheln. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, she was elected with 82.16% of the vote and is the successor to Patrick Becker (CDU).
coat of arms
The lily scepter wheel on a shield divided in white over blue in the municipal coat of arms goes back to the family coat of arms of the medieval noble family von Becheln . The rose is based on the coat of arms of the barons from and to the stone .
Buildings
The Protestant church goes back to a church building from the 13th century. Until the 18th century, the church was rebuilt and refurbished again and again. Today it has a Romanesque tower as well as Gothic frescoes, wall paintings and stucco inside.
