history

Half-timbered house on the Sulzbacher Dalles

Sulzbach was first mentioned on February 16, 1035 in the deed of foundation of the Palatinate Monastery of Limburg and was given to it by Emperor Konrad II . It says that the monastery will keep the place "as property, with all rights and usufructs as the Rhine Franconian dukes had since then".

After a period of alternating dominations and the temporary pledge to the free city of Frankfurt as the place came Reichsdorf after a division of the high courts in 1561 between Frankfurt and the Palatinate in 1613 to Electoral Palatinate.

During the Thirty Years' War , the place burned down in the course of the Battle of Höchst in 1622 , and the church burned down completely. After the Bergstrasse Recess in 1650, the Vogtei came to Kurmainz via Sulzbach as part of an area swap . The church, with the oldest components from 1031, was restored as an emergency church from 1652 to 1659 and in 1724 the structure that has been preserved to this day replaced the old nave. The canopies of the two entrances date back to 1660. In 1803, Sulzbach was one of the last five free imperial villages in the Old Kingdom . In 1804 the village with the Kurmainzer areas on the right bank of the Rhine came to the Duchy of Nassau and with this in 1866 to Prussia .

After Prussia was dissolved by the Allies after the Second World War , Sulzbach became part of the new federal state of Hesse . Thanks to Mayor Karl Reinke, the municipality survived the Hessian territorial reform in the 1970s as one of the very few unchanged. The actually planned incorporation to Bad Soden am Taunus was averted by massive protests by the population and a lawsuit before the State Court of Hesse .

Since 1964, the Main-Taunus-Zentrum has been located in the Sulzbach area, the first property built on the model of American, self-contained shopping centers , which has led to Sulzbach's solid tax income.

Culture and sights

Main-Taunus Arboretum

View into the arboretum

In the approximately 76 hectare Main-Taunus Arboretum, 51 hectares of which are in the Sulzbacher district, around 600 different tree and shrub species grow. While forest parks usually consist of a collection of individual trees - with a name plate and designation of origin - the state of Hesse has created a completely different forest park with the arboretum . Here different forest areas of the temperate zones of the earth are each represented by a group of trees and bushes, just as they occur as a plant community in nature. In addition, more than a third of the area is used for arable farming, pasture farming and beekeeping, so that a lively coexistence of natural and cultural landscapes has emerged.

Buildings

Evangelical Church at Platz an der Linde

Protestant church

The Evangelical Church is the symbol of the community Sulzbach and consists of a bell tower from the year 1031, an apse from the 15th century with parts of an original fresco design and a nave from 1724. The rich baroque design of the church space over two galleries is for a Protestant Church unique in the Rhine-Main region. The nave is also dominated by the organ from 1626 from the Katharinenkirche in Frankfurt am Main. This was bought by the Sulzbach parish in 1778 and then expanded and rebuilt.

Käsfraa

Käsfraa

In 1985 the monument to the Käsfraa (cheese woman) created by the local artist Hannelore Tegeder was erected. In the Middle Ages, hand cheese production was widespread in Sulzbach . The farmers in Sulzbach sold it on the market in Frankfurt am Main. That is why Sulzbach was jokingly called Käsbach in the vernacular. The bronze statue was erected as part of the 950th anniversary celebration.

Christmas pyramid on the Dalles

Since the fall of the Wall in 1990, there has been a town partnership with the community of Schönheide in the Ore Mountains . In Advent 2000, an Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid was set up on the Dalles, a central square in the town, to demonstrate the bond between the towns.

Bürgerbrunnen

The Bürgerbrunnen created by Hannelore Tegeder is located on the square at the linden tree, in front of the church. Erected in 1989, it consists of a bronze ring that is decorated with motifs from village and club life.

Heinrich Kleber Park

The Heinrich-Kleber-Park is a green area that runs along the railway line through most of the town. The Sulzbach flows through it. A pond was created in the middle of the park. In addition, a pavilion is used for public events. In the park there is a play area with an adjacent barbecue area which was awarded in 1954.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture

Sulzbach and its district are largely on Lößgrund . Another part of it lies on a mixture of sand and marl soil with a partly loamy, partly heavy and moist surface. This type of soil is well suited for agricultural use, which is why there are ten farms in Sulzbach. Grain cultivation has been widespread in Sulzbach since the settlement was first mentioned. Potato and maize cultivation were introduced later, and these are continued to this day. More recently rapeseed and sugar beet have been grown.

economy

In addition to the Main-Taunus-Zentrum (MTZ) and due to its proximity to Frankfurt am Main, world-famous large companies have settled in Sulzbach:

At the MTZ there used to be a drive-in cinema and a Holiday Inn Hotel , which is now continued as Dorint .

Education and care

The following schools are located on site:

Cretzschmarschule
  • Cretzschmarschule, elementary school
  • Mendelssohn-Bartholdy School (formerly Eichwald School), comprehensive school. Named after the composer, pianist and organist, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .

There are also five kindergartens:

  • Creche Kingfisher
  • KinderReich day care center
  • Pfiffikus day care center
  • Waldnest day care center
  • Protestant day care center
  • Catholic day care center and day nursery
  • Day care center for sugar beet

The youth center exists for youth work. The Eichwaldhallen Sulzbach are the sports halls of the community.

fire Department

The Sulzbach fire station

The Sulzbach (Taunus) volunteer fire brigade has existed since 1930 and currently has eight vehicles. In 2015, after a three-year construction period, the fire station was modernized and expanded. The fire brigade building is currently one of the most modern in the Main-Taunus district.

The height rescue group (HöRG) of the fire department of the Main-Taunus-Kreis has been stationed in Sulzbach since 1997 . Your tasks consist of rescuing and recovering injured people from heights and depths, which are generally not accessible to an ordinary fire brigade. In order to be able to count yourself among the height rescuers, additional training is required.
