City bikes

City cycling ( proper spelling in capital letters ; subtitle: Cycling for a good climate ) is a campaign by the Climate Alliance network . The aim is to cover as many kilometers as possible by bike as a group or individual in a given period of time, mainly in order to reduce both the own and the C0 2 emissions of the participating municipality.
The competition is nationwide and cities, municipalities, districts and regions and their residents can take part. The competition period is 21 consecutive days, which must be between May 1st and September 30th (in 2020 the period was extended to the end of October due to the COVID-19 pandemic ). Within this period of time, some cities combine this campaign with the European Mobility Week or the traditional “ Mobil ohne Auto” day of action .
In addition to climate protection - initially local - cycling is to be promoted with campaigns "in which the municipalities have a tried and tested, easy-to-implement measure at their disposal in order to be active in the important area of communication / public relations for sustainable mobility with relatively little effort and resources ( -er) to become ".
In 2018 the competition took place for the eleventh time. In 2017, more than 600 municipalities from all over Germany took part with a total of around 222,000 participants. In 2017, it was possible for municipalities outside Germany to participate in the competition for the first time.
background
The Climate Alliance is a registered association of municipalities founded in 1990 with the aim of protecting the climate. In March 2019, 1734 municipalities from 26 countries were members, 505 of them from Germany. The climate alliance aims to reduce motorized traffic as well as climate-friendly mobility. The City Cycling Campaign, which took place for the first time in 2008 and has been held annually since then, appeals to local politicians and citizens to switch to bicycles in their communities. The Climate Alliance provides the participating municipalities and their residents with infrastructure for the competition (e.g. webpage, app, etc.).
Special competitions
School cycling
As a supplement to the competitions with a regional character, school cycling was launched in Hesse in 2014, in which teams of schoolchildren can compete with one another.
City bike star
The city cycling stars who are appointed per municipality play a special role. They completely do without their car during the three-week cycle . This is used to attract the public with the symbolic “mothballing” and “mothballing” to make more people aware of city cycling and to motivate them to participate. For example, there was extensive press coverage in Mörfelden-Walldorf . A nationwide special competition was set up for the city bike stars.
