The climate alliance ( "the European cities with indigenous peoples of the rainforests / Alianza del Clima eV " ) is a network of cities , municipalities and districts founded in 1990 , which are committed to protecting the global climate . The more than 1,700 member municipalities from 26 European countries are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions locally. Your alliance partners are the indigenous peoples of the rainforests , they are represented by the COICA , the Coordinadora de las Organizaciones Indígenas de la Cuenca Amazónica , "Coordination of the indigenous organizations of the nine countries bordering the Amazon basin ".
The members undertake to continuously reduce their greenhouse gas emissions : They want to reduce their CO 2 emissions by ten percent every five years; starting from the base year 1990, this means halving per capita emissions by 2030. The long-term goal is to reduce emissions to 2.5 tons of CO 2 equivalent per capita and year.
The cornerstones of municipal climate protection are energy savings and energy efficiency , the use of renewable energy sources and climate-friendly mobility . The Climate Alliance advises cities and municipalities on the implementation of climate protection strategies and develops recognized tools for uniform measurement and recording of energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. The organization also participates in projects and offers campaigns aimed at different target groups. In addition to its own activities, the alliance is a partner in other campaigns and also takes political action; At national, European and international level, it advocates the concerns of European cities and municipalities involved in climate protection and supports the organizations of indigenous peoples.
In accordance with a holistic approach, the Climate Alliance was founded as a partnership between European municipalities and the umbrella organization of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon , the COICA: This has a permanent place on the board of the Climate Alliance and represents the interests of the indigenous rainforest peoples in all activities . For their part, the Climate Alliance members have undertaken to
- to refrain from using tropical wood and wood from overexploitation,
- Implement measures that preserve the biological diversity of the rainforest and guarantee the rights of those whose livelihoods depend on these forests,
- to support the rights of indigenous peoples as the best “administrators” of the rainforests in national and international strategies and agreements and
- to promote the dialogue between indigenous peoples, governments, the private sector and international institutions regarding an ecologically and socially sustainable use of the rainforests.
