The Climate Alliance Austria non-profit Ges.mbH is a company based in Vienna and operator of the largest communal climate protection network in Austria . The Climate Alliance consists of communities and schools, companies and indigenous organizations . The goals are to reduce climate-damaging emissions and protect the rainforest. The climate alliance was founded in 1990 in Frankfurt am Main between representatives from twelve municipalities (from Austria, D & CH), delegates from six indigenous organizations and representatives from 15 other organizations (universities, NGOs, etc.).

Parallel to the establishment of the European Secretariat of the Climate Alliance in Frankfurt am Main, coordination offices were set up in several countries at regional and national level. The climate alliance is now active in 26 European countries.

The long-term cooperation with selected regions in the Amazon is unique in Europe. The Austrian Climate Alliance has been supporting FOIRN , the umbrella organization of indigenous organizations on the Rio Negro in Brazil, since 1993  . And that on three levels: ideally, politically and financially. The focus is on raising awareness in Austria. A climate-friendly lifestyle not only lowers greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, but also lowers the pressure on the rainforests.

The greatest successes of the Climate Alliance partnership:

  • Protection of 122,000 km² of rainforest in the Amazon
  • The FOIRN received land rights from the Brazilian government in two stages - in 1998 and 2012 - for an area one and a half times the size of Austria.

The partnership between the Climate Alliance communities and the state in Vorarlberg with the Chocó region in Colombia is just as long-term and successful. This has existed since 1991.
