The Hessian Doll Museum is a doll - and toys - Museum in the Brothers Grimm -Stadt Hanau in Hesse .

History of origin

The Hessian Puppet Museum was established in 1983 by the City of Hanau and the State of Hesse in order to be able to show the historically valuable Gertrud Rosemann doll collection to the public and preserve it for the future. Since then, the museum has been supported by the non-profit association “Hessisches Puppenmuseum eV”. It was opened in the arcade of the historic Wilhelmsbad spa complex , which is part of the administration of the State Palaces and Gardens of Hesse .

The exhibition space was expanded several times, the basic holdings of the collection expanded and conceptually developed. Among other things, an antique and a Japanese department could be set up. The latter in cooperation with the doll museum in Hanau's twin town Tottori in Japan.

Dolls from antiquity to modern times are shown on over 800 m². In themed special exhibitions, the museum presents historical dolls, works by current doll artists and provides information about the role of toys in acquiring value. In addition, artists and artisans, especially from the region and Japan, will have a forum to present their work. Feeling, hearing, trying out and playing are encouraged in the museum.
