politics

From 1996 to 2006 Jagau was full-time mayor of the city of Laatzen near Hanover. Since 2006 he has been regional president of the Hanover region .

Hauke Jagau is a member of the Lower Saxony SPD state executive committee , of which he was deputy chairman until June 2008. He is also a member of the executive board of the SPD district of Hanover.

Before the local elections in 2010, Hauke Jagau was open to possible coalition talks with all political camps, except for the "Citizens' Forum". The decisive factor is whether there is a reasonable basis for long-term cooperation . He did not exclude the Left Party either.

In January 2011, Hauke Jagau came under public criticism when it became known that he did not want to extend the contract of long-time managing director of the Hanover Zoo, Klaus-Michael Machens, due to political differences. Machens threatened with age discrimination charges because of Jagau's statements . The clashes culminated in Machen's dismissal without notice in March, against whom Machens brought an action in April. Previously, from a criminal law perspective, the Hanover public prosecutor's office was unable to identify any indications of improper conduct by Klaus-Michael Machens , an assessment that was finally confirmed in July 2011. In February 2012, the Hanover Regional Court ruled that Machens' dismissal was unlawful and awarded him severance pay.
