Klaus-Michael Machens (born November 19, 1946 in Hildesheim ) is a Lower Saxony politician ( CDU ) and was the manager of the Hanover zoo .

Life

Making completed a study of the law in Göttingen . From 1974 to 1978 he was Lower Saxony's state chairman of the Junge Union and from 1978 to 1982 a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament . From 1981 to 1982 he worked as a lawyer in Hildesheim. This was followed by a time as an advisor to the administrative director of the NDR Hamburg and as deputy director of the municipal association of Greater Hanover , until he finally took up the position of managing director of Zoo Hannover GmbH in 1994 .

When Machens took over this office, Hannover Zoo was in a crisis. In 1995, under his leadership, an interdisciplinary planning team examined the zoo's strengths and weaknesses. Zoo experts, architects and recreational researchers developed the Zoo 2000 concept in close cooperation , with which the zoo took part in the ideas competition of the World Exhibition Expo 2000 . In 1996 the zoo was officially recognized as the "Project Expo 2000", but was initially viewed with suspicion, especially among experts. The concept was created using the Design Thinking method.

"Machens has - calculated on a full-time basis - created almost 250 new jobs and more than tripled the visitor prices. Although Hanover's zoo is the most expensive in Germany with 23 euros for adults, twice as many guests come as in 1994. The zoo sells almost 20 times more Annual tickets, namely more than 100,000 pieces, and the entrance fees rose by 555 percent. "

The intention of the regional president of the Hanover region, Hauke Jagau , not to want to extend the Machens contract due to political differences, has caused controversial discussions since January 2011. Machens threatened with age discrimination lawsuit . The clashes culminated in his dismissal without notice in March, against whom Machens brought an action in April. Previously, from a criminal law perspective, the Hanover public prosecutor's office was unable to identify any indications of improper conduct by Klaus-Michael Machens , an assessment that was finally confirmed in July 2011. In February 2012, the Hanover Regional Court ruled that Machens' dismissal was unlawful and awarded him severance pay. Klaus-Michael Machens started his own business as a consultant in autumn 2011.

Machens is the brother of the former Lord Mayor of Hildesheim, Kurt Machens .
