history
Old names of the place are after 1124 Hemmege , 1185–1206 Hemmige , 1223 Hemie , around 1225 and 1269 Hemmie .
In the Wilkenburg district, the Roman marching camp of Wilkenburg from the time of the birth of Christ was found , which offered space for around 20,000 Roman soldiers on an area of around 30 hectares . The facility is the first marching camp discovered in Lower Saxony and the furthest north-east in Germania ( Germania magna ) on the right bank of the Rhine .
The medieval settlement of Klein Hemmingen , which fell into desolation around the 15th century, was located near Hemmingen . Settlement remnants were discovered in 2014 during earthworks at the Carl Friedrich Gauß School and archaeologically examined. In the course of growing new housing estates on the outskirts of Hanover in the 1960s, the communities of Hemmingen and Westerfeld were initially merged and given their own zip code.
On March 1, 1974, the communities of Arnum, Devese, Harkenbleck, Hemmingen-Westerfeld, Hiddestorf, Ohlendorf and Wilkenburg were merged to form the new community of Hemmingen. The seven former congregations quickly formed a local community. The rapid development after 1945 is characteristic of the districts. In 1939, only 4,334 inhabitants lived in the area of today's town of Hemmingen, today there are around 18,500. Modern residential buildings determine the townscape.
The municipality of Hemmingen has been a town since March 1, 1999.
In 2003 and 2004 the town hall square and part of the adjacent buildings were renovated and modernized. The town hall was partially demolished and the new building was expanded and stocked up to meet the requirements of a modern administration.
