Niklas Feierabend (born April 28, 1997 in Hanover ; † May 1, 2016 at Pattensen ) was a German football player who had played in the youth teams of Hanover 96 since 2005 , played in the B-Junior and A-Junior Bundesliga and has been under contract with the professional team since the 2015/16 season . He was killed in a car accident on May 1, 2016.

Life

After work, he was the only child of his parents who was born in Hanover and grew up in the Wettbergen district . In 2015 he completed his Abitur at the partner school in Hannover 96 , the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Schule Hemmingen , and then started a voluntary social year at the school, which he finished in February 2016. He lived in Hemmingen until his death .

Career

After work, his career began in his hometown in the F-Jugend of the TuS Wettbergen district association , where he stayed until 2005. He then went through all of Hannover 96's youth teams since the 2005/06 season . In the 2013/14 season he played with the U16 in the Lower Saxony league, with which he ranked 2nd at the end of the season. He also played twice for the U17 team in the B-Junior Bundesliga this season . For the 2014/15 season , the midfielder skipped a year of the B-Jugend and was accepted into the U19 team in the Bundesliga North / Northeast by Daniel Stendel , who was considered his greatest sponsor . He played his first league game for the A-Juniors on August 9, 2014, the first match day, in a 6-2 win at FC Carl Zeiss Jena , and scored his first goal on October 25 in the game against Rot-Weiß Erfurt ( 1: 1). This season Feierabend was able to prevail as a regular player and only missed one of 26 games due to a yellow card suspension. He was runner-up in the Bundesliga North / Northeast with Hannover 96 behind RB Leipzig and contributed seven goals and five assists.

From the 2015/16 season, the midfielder trained regularly with the professional team of Hannover 96 and also played in several friendly matches, including against VfV 06 Hildesheim (2-0) and Arminia Bielefeld (1: 2). After work, in January 2016 the professionals traveled to the training camp in Belek , Turkey . He was used against Hertha BSC (0: 1) as well as against VfB Stuttgart (0: 2). On February 17, 2016, he signed a long-term contract with the Hannover 96 professionals and was given the number 36 on his shirt. The sporting director, Christian Möckel , emphasized:

"[Niklas Feierabend] is a very hopeful talent with qualities suitable for the Bundesliga and a high level of comprehension."

After playing in three friendly matches during the international break and scoring three goals, including two goals in the game against Heesseler SV (9: 4), it was about a month and a half after he signed his contract against Hamburger SV (0: 3 ) on April 2 and against Hertha BSC (2: 2) on April 8, 2016 as a substitute in the professional squad, but was not used. With the U19, whose team captain Feierabend was appointed to in February 2016 after Marcel Langer's suspension, he made it to the DFB Junior Club Cup final in 2016 . In competition he scored four goals in four games and gave three assists ; In the Bundesliga , he scored eleven goals in 23 games. His last game was on April 30, 2016 against RB Leipzig (3: 1), in which he was replaced in the 30th minute due to a laceration. On May 21, 2016, Feierabend posthumously won the DFB Junior Club Cup after his team beat Hertha BSC 4-2 in the final. At the award ceremony, Captain Maurice Springfeld wore a jersey from his deceased team-mate with the number 15 on his back.

death

After he celebrated his 19th birthday on the evening of April 30, 2016, a Saturday, it was time to end work in the early morning hours of May 1, 2016 together with four other people (three men and one woman) between the ages of 18 and 21 involved in a car accident. At around 5:45 am, the car crashed into a tree between the villages of Hiddestorf and Pattensen without any outside interference. After work, as well as two other occupants, who were sitting with him in the back seat of the Opel Astra and were not wearing a seat belt , suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident, while the passenger was slightly injured and the driver was seriously injured. Since the driver's blood alcohol concentration was found to be 1.1 per mille, the public prosecutor's office investigated him on suspicion of negligent homicide . In February 2017, the Hanover District Court sentenced the driver to a suspended sentence of one year and eight months, to pay compensation for pain and suffering of 1500 euros each to the parents of the three deceased, and to be banned from driving for 15 months. The higher regional court in Celle overturned the judgment because it had not been clarified whether it was a driving error or whether driving under the influence of alcohol was the sole cause of the accident .

Death in the evening evoked a great media response; His death was reported in many media nationwide and internationally. After his death became known, the 96 race day at the Neue Bult racecourse in Langenhagen and the regional league game of the second team from Hanover at VfV Hildesheim were canceled at short notice. In addition, before Marvin Schwäbe was honored as Lower Saxony's footballer of the year, he was remembered for a minute's silence . Niklas Feierabend was also honored at the following Bundesliga match between Hanover and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on May 7, 2016; the home team came in in jerseys with number 36 in the evening before they clapped for him. On May 11th a commemoration took place in the Trinitatis Church in Hemmingen-Westerfeld . The theologian Michael Wohlers delivered the sermon to around 200 mourners. The subsequent burial of the evening urn was carried out in the immediate family circle.

At the end of 2017, there was a revision hearing on the accidental death of Niklas Feierabend and his two friends after the higher regional court had overturned the verdict against the driver. The driver was sentenced again to a suspended sentence of 20 months in early 2018.
