Ricklinger gravel ponds
The Ricklinger Kiesteiche are a group of adjoining ponds ( quarry ponds ) in the southern urban area of Hanover . They are located in the Hanoverian districts of Döhren , Ricklingen and Wülfel as well as in the neighboring town of Hemmingen in the floodplain of the river Leine . They are of great importance as a local recreation area for the city of Hanover.
Location and description
In terms of landscape, they belong to the southern Leineaue , which ends in a northerly direction about one kilometer beyond the gravel ponds near the city center. The area around the gravel ponds is also known as Döhrener Masch . The entire area is part of the Obere Leine landscape conservation area , unprotected areas are only the Ricklinger Aegir open-air swimming pool and some allotment gardens southeast of the three official bathing waters.
The Ricklinger Kiesteiche emerged from gravel mining in the first half of the 20th century, and in the southern part also increasingly in the second half. Its landscape is characterized by the extensive meadows surrounding it with trees dominated by willow trees. These quarry ponds are therefore not ponds designed for fish farming with inlet and complete drainage , but at least some of them are connected by a small watercourse or a small canal and they are used for fishing.
In summer they are visited by more than 10,000 bathers a day. They are used by anglers all year round, and the wide meadow area around the gravel ponds is mainly used by model kites and model airplane fans. In addition, numerous joggers, walkers and cyclists use the area. Various private (barbecue) parties take place every summer evening, especially near the triangle pond.
Ponds
Three of the ponds are considered to be Ricklinger gravel ponds in the narrower sense. They are officially approved as bathing water:
- 5.5 hectares of the Ricklinger pond . This official bathing water area is located between the Südschnellweg in the south and the large Ricklinger peninsula north-east of the Aegir Bad, used by the Hanover Fisheries Association. This bathing water also has a share in the Ricklinger Aegir outdoor pool and bathing areas on the east bank northeast of the Südschnellweg. The entire Ricklinger Teich, which is also called Großer Ricklinger Teich or simply Großer Teich , has a water surface of 20.5 hectares. The Seniebach watercourse flows through the Großer Hemminger Teich and the Großer Ricklinger Teich from the south and flows into the east of the Ricklinger in the north Pond flowing Ihme . The Osterbrückenweg separates the two ponds and bridges the Seniebach that connects them and runs almost in the city of Hanover.
- A 6-hectare, seven-meter pond where nude bathing is desirable and which is almost exclusively visited by nudist bathers. This pond is the only one with a paved footbridge with ladders for swimmers to enter. The actual nudist area on the north bank is covered with dense trees and bushes. On the east bank there are several entry possibilities without sand filling. Allegedly, the seven-meter pond is said to have been exactly seven meters deep at the deepest point. Groups of year-round swimmers use the seven-meter pond at all air and water temperatures because of the relatively comfortable jetty. In contrast to the other two bathing waters, it is not in Ricklingen, but in Döhren, the district boundary runs close to its west bank.
- 4.5 ha large, so-called triangular pond because of its shape , which attracts the largest number of bathers and is surrounded by a very extensive meadow area. The actual bathing area is in the south of the lake and has no sand pile. There are other such entry opportunities around the lake.

The Südschnellweg , which connects the federal highways B 3 , B 6 and B 65 , runs as an elevated road over the gravel ponds and the Leine and causes considerable noise pollution, especially at the seven-meter pond. It is optically concealed in parts by continuous tree vegetation. Furthermore, the fact that large amounts of building rubble were dumped into the ponds when they were created is still noticeable in the ponds, which, due to its sharp edges, still represent obstacles when entering the banks and often leads to foot injuries. All bathing areas are freely accessible and unguarded all year round, which means that almost every season bathing accidents are fatal, often in connection with alcohol consumption. On the bank between Dreiecksteich and Ricklinger Teich there is a larger snack bar with sanitary facilities, at the seven-meter pond there are individual chemical toilets and, in good weather, mobile snack vendors.
The fishing in the three ponds, the rivers in this area and some of the other ponds is leased to the Hanover Fisheries Association, which fishes and takes care of the care there.
More ponds
Most of the other ponds, which extend along the Leine into the southern outskirts of Hanover in the area of the city of Hemmingen, are reserved for quiet relaxation and serve as a retreat for numerous animal and plant species, including many water birds. However, some areas are privately owned by fishing and allotment associations and are only accessible to a limited extent or not at all, while others are used sporadically by bathers. In the immediate vicinity to the west of the Great Hemminger Pond , a pond with 4 hectares of water houses the Hemmingen lido , to the east, hardly further away, in Hanover's Döhren district, is the 13-hectare Great Döhrener Pond and a much smaller pond. Further south in the Wülfel district are the large Wülfeler and Detmarscher ponds, which are heavily structured by peninsulas and islands, and further small ponds east of the Leine. To the west of the Great Wülfeler and Detmarscher ponds , the original Hemminger town center joins the bank area of a similarly large pond . The large ponds mentioned have water surfaces of over nine but less than twenty hectares and have irregular outlines.
The ponds adjoining to the south extend mainly around the village of Wilkenburg , which belongs to the city of Hemmingen , and are therefore also called Wilkenburg ponds . In this area there are six ponds with water areas between 9 and 16 hectares and other small ponds. The easternmost of Wilkenburger ponds, the Steinfeldsee as well as some (smaller) Laatzener ponds are part of - the protected landscape embedded Upper line - nature reserve old linen , which begins between leash and Wilkenburg and streches to the southeast. About one kilometer south of Wilkenburg, just before the village of Harkenbleck , the almost continuous chain of ponds ends with the 60 hectare pond system (water surface 46 hectares) of the Moeller und Sohn fish farm.
