The Alte Leine is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony cities of Laatzen , Hemmingen and Pattensen in the Hanover region . It is embedded in the Obere Leine landscape protection area .

description

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 191 is 317  hectares in size. Since 2004 it has been part of the FFH area "Leineaue between Hanover and Ruthe". The area is almost entirely from the conservation area surrounded "upper line" through which it also with some nature reserve south lie " Leineaue between rod and Koldingen is networked." The area has been a nature reserve since June 10, 1999. The former “Laatzener Teiche” nature reserve, which was designated on November 15, 1979, has merged into the “Alte Leine” nature reserve. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.

The nature reserve is located south of Hanover between Laatzen, Hemmingen and Pattensen and forms the Alte Leine, the Fuchsbach east of Pattensen and the Koldinger Mühlengraben north of Koldingen with its banks and north of the confluence of the Fuchsbach and Koldinger Mühlengraben part of the floodplain area accompanying the Alte Leine as well as several still waters in the Leine lowlands under protection.

The Alte Leine is a former arm of the Leine. Today the Alte Leine is created by the confluence of the Fuchsbach and Koldinger Mühlengraben. When the Leine floods, it still functions as a flood arm of the Leine. The Alte Leine meanders over a length of around 12 km, close to nature, through the valley with broken edges , impact and sliding slopes . The river bed is predominantly sandy and gravel, with clay and mud deposited in quiet places . The river sections are in parts of lowland forest residues and Hochstaudenfluren accompanied. The floodplain areas are often flooded and have numerous flood hollows. These are characterized by pronounced moist vegetation such as reed beds and floodplain .

The pond, which are to be partially verlandende old arm rests, in part, to flat, through sound mining and deeper, by gravel mining is resulting water, have in part to well-developed aquatic and riparian vegetation. To the north and west of the nature reserve there are numerous other still waters created by soil degradation.

Large parts of the lowland are used for agriculture, mainly as grassland . There are also wet grasslands and swamps . Areas are occasionally used as arable land. In the south of Rethen (Leine) lying around 21 hectares Koldinger Holz, the remainder of a former hardwood floodplain forest , is part of the nature reserve. The Alte Leine flows along the western edge of the Koldinger Holz and shapes the alluvial forest with regular flooding. In the east of the Koldinger Holz there is a 350 year old pedunculate oak . It is around 30 meters high and its trunk circumference is 5.5 meters. The oak was designated as a natural monument in 1955 .

In the nature reserve, there are around 400 polluted willows , mainly along the Alte Leine , which used to be cut and used in a variety of ways. Today the pollarded willows are cut back as part of maintenance measures in order to preserve their characteristic appearance, and because this ancient form of willow culture is also significant as a diverse habitat.

Gray heron and white stork in the "Alte Leine" nature reserve

The nature reserve is a habitat for numerous bird species - over 250 have been recorded, 90 regularly occur as breeding birds - but also many insect , amphibian and bat species as well as rare plant species. Since 2005 there is again evidence of beavers living in the Leineaue .

In addition to nature conservation, the protected area is also used for local recreation . In order to reduce the disturbance caused by visitors, a concept for visitor control was worked out. Information boards were set up in several places. At the Hermann-Bettels-See (Steinfeldsee) and at the Wehrkamp there are observation towers that allow an elevated view of the nature reserve. The Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), which looks after the area, operates the Alte Feuerwache nature conservation center on the edge of the nature reserve , which is located in the Laatzen district of Grasdorf . It was opened on May 1, 2004 and serves as an information and contact point for visitors to the protected area. In the nature conservation center, permanent exhibitions about the southern Leineaue natural area are shown. It also serves environmental education. At the nature conservation center there is also an approximately 850 m² outdoor area. Between 1988 and the end of 2002 the Naturschutzbund Deutschland operated the Nature Conservation Information Center Laatzener Teiche , which was located in the Maria Troll Hut on the edge of the former “Laatzener Teiche” nature reserve.
